/signed,
but only as long as all weapons/spells in the game have an extra 4 armor penetration against people wielding shields.

Any way someone could new rules restricting the amount of necromancy practised at one sitting? The ocassional thread res is needed to supply a steady stream of lolcats into the boards. But when lots of people are going through and bumping multiple dead threads at once, the on hand supply of cat pictures isn't suffecient and it seems people refrain from posting them.

Found some different threads on related issues. Links removed to prevent unnecessary thread-rezzing.

Might become a balance issue, but it'd be nice if they did it anyway and would work to adjust to it. Caster weapons too.

God, I remember this /notsigned. It was like a classic response.

My opinion still hasn't changed. The reasoning behind changing shield AL is because it isn't a "pretty number" (which doesn't exist) and has nothing to do with game balance.
With all the casters now using shields in fact, it makes more sense to REDUCE the AL amount of shields.

Even though I do think that there should be a way to customize shields and off-hands... I just don't know what they should give...

So a customized shield on a caster would grant him +12 armor total? Wow fantastic imba...
So maybe make it just like weapons % based instead of a fixed +4? It would read "Customized: +25% Armor". A caster would get 10 then... but what about conditional armor boosts from mods? Affected by this too? Perfect customized shield would then have 20 Armor and +12.5 Armor (vs Damagetype), cooolio!

scrap it, it's a bad idea overall.

Shields are balanced as they are,
neither shields nor focus items need any customization possibilities...

You can already customise staves for moar wanding powahz.

If 16 is a funny number, what about "14-27", "6-28" and "9-41". Surely they can be rounded to their closest factor of 10 on customisation?

No. /notsigned.

ermm... 15 is an odd number.

Anyway, Id love to /sign this but people have made good points in stating that warriors and paragons have enough armour as it is.

Because giving everyone an additional ~5% damage reduction for no other reason than to 'have a pretty number' is a good idea?

Right.

Not signed. Monks use shields as enough as it is, we could officially start calling them warriors if the shields gave +20 armor...

Still seems like a nice idea, since pretty much everything else can be customized in the game.

Look at a lot of movies, you see warriors with their own shields. Look at Dragonheart, he customized his shield with a tooth of each dragon he had killed.
Cause only warriors use shield right?

No problem. we make shields give 12, and make customization give +4, for a tota lof 16.

The point is making customization more important, smething to take items out of the market so new stuff is sold.

Customization should have more appeal, and for off-hands items is useless nad for caster items quite silly.

Shields are balanced in the game as it is. Customization would shift the balance, meaning you would need to buff other off hands, and all 2 handed weapons to shift the balance back to where it was. Which ends up as no buff at all.

It will be quite clear to you that this is /notsigned

It's not a funny number at all. It's 20% of the damage reduction provided by a max piece of armor. Adding a shield is like customization for your armor (provided your armor is 80AL), without having the can't trade it drawback.

My maths. Let me show you them.

But if you wanted to allow customization, why would a Shield get a 25% bonus while weapons only get 20%? Your 'pretty' 20 would disappear, but at least keep some consistency, and make it 19.
